Another version of sorry, only Ida wasnât altogether sure what she was apologising for.
Being a rubbish friend? Making a hash of her life?
âItâs all right.â Lizâs voice sounded close and normal. When sheâd called, that evening, Ida had given her the number of the landline. Sheâd discovered it, written on a strip of paper and sellotaped to the base of the phone.
âExcept it isnât,â she said. âYou deserve better.â
âWell, yes I do and you better buck up.â
Ida heard the smile in Lizâs voice.
âItâs a virtually non-existent signal for the mobile,â she said. âI have to wander out onto the moor or hang from the bathroom window to text you.â
